We think of city infrastructure in a particular way – sort of like bones and connective tissue in a body; the major structural components that support our existence. Beyond the bones, we need to include key pieces that nourish our higher selves- our minds and spirits. If cities are merely paved surfaces and police and fire service, there is nothing that distinguishes one place from another. But this isn’t the case: The Gallup Soul of the Community survey from 2008 to 2010 found strong correlations between peoples’ emotional attachment to the communities they lived in, and higher levels of local GDP. They also found a link between passion for and loyalty to places, and the health of the local economy.

Regional Relationships commissions artists, scholars, writers and activists to create works that investigate the natural, industrial and cultural landscapes of a region. It is a platform to re-imagine the cultural histories and spatial configurations that exist around us; it is an invitation to see what we can learn—and learn what we can see—by juxtaposing spaces and narratives that are usually kept apart.
Popular beliefs about human geography are composed of binary oppositions like “urban” and “rural” and “cosmopolitan” and “provincial”. These divisions naturalize synthetic borders and harden political boundaries, obsfucating their cultural function. Applying a regional lens encourages us to think more expansively about the disparate geographies that might exist within the space of one small town or across continents and oceans.
Regional Relationships will send commissioned art/culture projects to subscribing individuals and institutions on a semiannual basis. The first edition features work by artist Matthew Friday who looks at watersheds and mines in the Ohio River Valley. Our second edition will be made by artist and writer Claire Pentecost, and will document the transnational migrations of genetically modified seeds.

prototype 180 is the 180 degree structural rotation of an acre of land and the existing single family home. This takes place in the first-ring subdivision of Sharpstown in Houston, Texas. The rotation will be live streamed over the internet in high definition video.
American artist Mary Ellen Carroll conceptualized prototype 180 ten years ago as a work of art whose process will make architecture perform. It is a reconsideraton of monumentality in performance, sculpture, architecture and technology. prototype 180 expands the historical timeline of the land art works from the 60s and 70s (The Lightning Fields, Spiral Jetty, The Sun Tunnels, etc.) through architecture’s usurpment of art in the 80s and 90s (Bilbao, Burj Dubai, etc.) to the present political epoch and the use of policy as a readymade material.
The only metropolitan area in the United States without a formal land use policy/no zoning, the city of Houston selected itself as the site for prototype 180, where there is an implicit freedom associated with Houston’s ‘free enterprise’ development.
prototype 180 is, literally, a ground-shifting exercise, in that it structurally involves the rotation, back to front, of a house and its surrounding land by Cherry House Moving. By rotating the house and land 180 degrees, Mary Ellen Carroll is calling for a total reorientation of thinking, of vantage point, and of how we work and how we live. This process Carroll believes a complete reconsideraton in standard operating procedure must occur to encourage new policies of the urban, cultural, and the social. Post the structural rotation, Carroll will retrofit and rehabilitate the unoccupied structure and it will be reprogrammed architecturally.
The average stand-alone, single-family house is built on the same basic communal plans that has been in operation, and gone unquestioned, for the last century or more. Carroll is overturning not just the house itself, but its operational systems, in expectation of new, more innovative and sustainable ways of building and retrofitting existing buildings as a model and laboratory. Its goal is to make architecture and building systems in aging, first ring suburbs perform as a dynamic process. prototype 180 is within the aging, first-ring suburb of Sharpstown and the revitalization program of an innovation territory (www.innovationterritories.com) will become a global model and laboratory for the development and application of innovative building and communication technologies and cultural programming.
